Two large organizations, now powered by promising players from the amateur scene, are now facing each other to test their prowess in this MPL season. ONIC PH was named as the super rookie amateur team from the previous season, and they will now go up against the new super rookie team in town, also reigning fresh from the amateur scene. Will NXPE prove that they truly are the new super team this season, or will ONIC greet them with an unexpected welcome?

The drafting phase was overall standard for both teams, banning out unwanted heroes and picking comfort heroes. NXPE immediately drafted their support duo, consisting of Valentina and Kaja, whereas ONIC secured the famous Fredrinn, Pharsa and Ruby. NXPE then drafted the Yu Zhong, Marties and Beatrix, while ONIC picked the Brody and Thamuz for themselves. With this, NXPE possessed a lot of disruption on their side, while ONIC’s composition revolved around control and burst damage.

Both teams basically mirrored each other until the first turtle spawned which was secured by ONIC, followed by a kill onto NXPE’s jungler. The members of ONIC easily had the upper hand in terms of pickoff potential, as long as they positioned themselves properly in the bushes. This enabled the team to grab the second turtle, however NXPE found tradeoffs to equalize. Skirmishes were back-and-forth, however ONIC maintained the gold lead. ONIC had the advantage in the Lord pit, however BoyetDR stole ONIC’s attempt to secure it. Despite stealing the Lord, ONIC still denied NXPE’s attempt to siege and destroy towers, since NXPE overcommitted after the Lord fight, resulting in their members getting picked off. ONIC’s macro gameplay definitely showed during the second Lord fight, as they outclassed the members of NXPE and secured the next Lord. NXPE attempted an ambush play from behind, however ONIC anticipated this, and it led to NXPE’s demise as they were wiped out, leaving the base open for destruction for ONIC.

Game 2’s drafting phase had relatively the same patterns and motives, with NXPE grabbing the Valentina and Yu Zhong and ONIC grabbing the Fredrinn, Pharsa and Ruby once again. This time, NXPE drafted the Karrie, Lolita and Baxia, hoping to manage team fights better, while ONIC drafted the Claude and Dyrroth for both burst and reap damage output.

The control brought by the heroes of NXPE truly paid its dividends in the early game, with pickoffs onto Ryota to easily secure the first turtle. ONIC felt the amount of slows, control and anti-heal that NXPE possessed, wherein NXPE was able to dominate around the neutral objectives. All of ONIC’s outer turrets were destroyed by the 7th minute, which gave NXPE a comfortable opportunity to position themselves for the Lord. Both teams were out for blood, hungry for teamfights and pickoffs, but NXPE secured the first Lord and maximized it by taking down ONIC’s inner turrets. However, ONIC was able to bounce back and equalize, as they displaced NXPE in a crucial Lord fight, securing the second Lord and evening out the map. An attempted backdoor play care of Nets transpired, wherein it was almost successful if NXPE did not make it in time to defend, as their base was left vulnerable with one single hit remaining. The third Lord was the deciding factor of the game, as NXPE secured it with the help of BruskoDR’s setup play, stunning members of ONIC. ONIC was left with two members to defend, however this was not enough against four members from the side of NXPE. NXPE extends this series with a back-and-forth game against ONIC, 1-1.

Both teams’ bans were no question and no different, removing as much utility and mobility as possible. NXPE secured the Valentina once again, but ONIC responded with the Fredrinn once more and the Karrie. Akai and the notable Lolita from the last game were drafted by NXPE, but ONIC took Yu Zhong this time around. ONIC drafted the Xavier, a reliable mage in terms of damage, however NXPE might have countered this with the Benedetta pick.

With an early usage of BoyetDR’s Heavy Spin, this gave the go signal for ONIC to easily secure the first turtle. Nonetheless, GoyongDR found a pickoff on Kekedoot. Both teams proceeded back to their respective laning phases until another messy turtle fight transpired. This time, NXPE was able to secure this, alongside with 2 kills in their favor. With this momentum, NXPE continued to find kills on the top lane, resulting in a successful siege onto the outer turret. After 7 minutes into the game, NXPE gained a 2,500 gold lead against their opponents. ONIC needed to hold until the late game for their Xavier and Karrie to activate. With NXPE holding the map dominance, they easily secured the first Lord by the 10th minute. Approaching the second lord, NXPE held a 6,000 gold lead, however Ryota was able to find BoyetDR, enabling ONIC to secure the Lord, but they were wiped out by the side of NXPE, putting ONIC’s Lord to waste. By the third Lord spawning, NXPE still had the map advantage, which led to them slaying it. ONIC, with a strong late game insurance, managed to fend off the Lord and the members of NXPE in a successful defensive play. The brawl between NXPE and ONIC extended until the 28th minute, however Sensui stole the crucial final Lord of the game, and two members from NXPE were picked off. Due to long respawn timers, NXPE was left vulnerable, and ONIC finally ended the game with a miraculous comeback, 2-1.
